Workshops - Drop Spindle Basics
If you every wanted to try spinning your own yarn, but were afraid that a spinning wheel would trigger a witches curse that you would then prick your finger and fall into an eternal slumber, then drop spindle is for you! (Not that this is even possible with a regular non-evil spinning wheel, but that is another subject for another time)
The drop spindle technique how humans made yarn in the 30,000 years between when we stopped wearing all leather and the invention of the spinning wheel. A drop spindle is a simple handheld device allows raw fibers to be spun into strong and durable yarns. Fun, fast, and portable, this technique can deliver a wide range of results and some stunningly beautiful handspun material.
The techniques used on drop spindle also provide a solid foundation for learning the spinning wheel as the basic premise is the same, only the motions are different.
Students will learn how to spin with a drop spindle. We will discuss drop spindle and spinning basics, fiber types, fiber preparation, and gain the skills to spin singles.
